She's a fighter

Kynlee is doing so good, yesterday when i was there visiting her she opened her eyes while i was talking to her...made me cry. She should be off the ventilator today or early tomorrow and they have lowered her pain meds so she is starting to be more alert. breaks my heart to see her like this but, i want my baby home so if this is what it takes to make her better..then so be it! Mommy loves you Kyn-e!

I just love these feet, baby feet smell so good you just want to eat them up!
Kaylees feet are little skinny but still scrumptious looking and kynlees feet well..they look like little jelly bellies and when she gets out of the hospital i will be having a jelly belly buffet!!

Her prognosis is excellent

Monday night we arrived at the hospital to spend some quality time with our little Kynlee, she had finished her 10 days of no eating and Tuesday morning was going to be the first time she would eat again. We were so excited, she had been doing so good she is such a little fighter. Well once we got there i ran back washed my hands and visited with her nurse a little bit about her day, she told me that earlier in the day she had started spitting up...i looked at her and said are we talking about the same baby..because my baby has not been eating for 10 days how could she be spitting up??? she told me it was a little bile from her stomach and everything was fine we were still on track for feeding her tomorrow..so i thought everything was fine. I picked her up and we sat and rocked and cuddled for a little while..untill she started vomiting lots more bile, i was very scared the drs and nurse practitioner ran in and took her from me looked her over and ordered and xray to be done immediately. i started crying because i knew something was wrong..the xray came back and the dr and nurses came to talk to me they explained that kynlee is not a good as they thought and she would be air evac to more intensive care unit that was more capable of taking care of her needs. they explained that had she not started to throw up and we would have fed her then things could have been life threatening for her and to thankful this was caught before feeding her again. She was transferred to Banner Desert NICU and once we arrived there we were greeted by several drs and a surgeon..they explained was going on and that she was going to need surgery to repair what the Necrotizing Enterocolitis had damaged. Even though they did some tests that would show them where the damage was..her surgery was still considered exploratory and they really did not know how bad it could be. We had to sign all these consent forms saying that she may need an ostomy bag or that she may need parts of her intestine removed, it was very scary. The surgeon and his team was very knowledgeable and explained everything to us so that we could understand. After talking with the drs and surgeon I felt like I could breathe again, it felt like "finally" someone is doing something to fix her and we can move on, its hard to leave your two week old baby in the hands of someone else not really knowing what the outcome will be. After surgery the surgeon came to speak with us about what he had found and how he repaired it, he said that the "Nec" damaged and killed 50% of her large intestine, her appendix and 5% of her small intestine beyond repair. They removed all the damaged parts and sewed the small and large intestine back together. He explained that she does run the risk of infection for the rest of her life, and that for the first two years of her life she will she will poo more than normal. But if all heals well in the next 5 days then her prognosis is excellent.

P.S. Addy, Karter & Ella...we miss you too, dont worry about your flowers I wont let them die! Enjoy your trip and have fun and hurry home! Kortlyn is drawing you a picture and I will post it later..xoxxo love shauna and kortlyn

Welcome home Kaylee

After spending 8 days in nicu, Kaylee is home...we are so excited!! Cooper and Kortlyn are meeting their little sister for the first time, and already love her to pieces! We are so lucky to have the two most perfect little girls in our family! Welcome home sweetie! We are missing Kynlee and can't wait for her to come home too, the Dr.'s say she wont be coming home for about 3 more weeks, she has a condition called Necrotizing Enterocolitis http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/digestive/nec.html and this is common in premature babies, all we can do is pray for her. She is progressing and doing good (as good as she can be) she is starting to be more like herself now, and thats good because it means she is feeling better which makes it alot easier to accept 3 weeks. Although it is so difficult for me to leave her there everyday, i just can't wait for her to come and we can be all together.

Here is Kynlee still in nicu, that tube is sucking the gases out of her stomach. Its hard to look at, but we know its helping her.

Cooper is so smitten by his new little sister, he is the best big brother ever!
Kortlyn is a great big sister, she loves to help mom with anything and everything that Kaylee needs! Im so lucky to have 3 best girlfriends!
And here is little miss Kaylee trying out her new baby cage..(thats what Kortlyn calls the crib) so far she loves it, there is just a little something missing...we love you Kynlee!

Introducing Kynlee and Kaylee

Its a long story so here it goes...a couple of weeks ago we had gone for our 34 week ultrasound to check the growth of the twins..and i always look so forward to going and seeing them grow and just to watch them on the screen is so exciting! well when the ultrasound was complete the tech informed that my girls were kinda small for their gestation and they should be a pound heavier she says they were 4.2 lbs each! i was very upset about this news and i went home and stewed on it for a little, while that afternoon and then finally called the dr. to confirm if what she said was true well he said yes its true they should be heavier but its not a real concern, that im a little girl and i might just have little babies..and to be safe he was going to send me to the perinatologist to have a more detailed ultrasound. So we went and that too confirmed they were a little small but they were still in the safe zone and i would need to have an ultrasound and nst(non stress test) done every week to track their growth. So last friday i had an appt at the hospital for my nst, i took kortlyn with me, we were planning on going to coops game afterwards...well once we got there the babies had a different idea! so they took me into triage and hooked me up to the monitors, come to find my blood pressure is pretty high and would not go down with rest or laying on my left side.. then we come to find there is protein in my urine which is bad news and the dr. decided i needed to stay the night to be monitored. well when i woke satuday morning i had started having contractions pretty regular and my blood pressure was still pretty high and after 24 hrs i still had protein in my urine! so the dr. said we need to do a c-section tonight, and i said NO YOUR NOT! despite my previous post about being done..i was only 35 weeks and 4 days and i knew my girls were not ready for this world! my dr. came in special sunday morning to perform my c-section at 10am. At 10:33 am April 27th 2008 both my girls came into the world..yes i said both came and yes in the same minute..so thats kinda neat little story they can share, they were born at the same time...! after being so concerned about their weights and stuffing my face with food for a week trying to pork them up..they were just fine! Kynlee was born 5 lbs and 6 oz and Kaylee was born 4 lbs and 12 oz! so i had 10 lbs of baby in my tummy..holy smokes! because they are preemies they had some difficulty breathing and needed some help for the first night and now the only thing that keeps them from coming home is being able to feel those tummies with food! the dr wants them to eat 2 oz in thirty minutes or less and well with them being so small they tire easy and but kaylee is well on her way! kynlee has had some set backs and will be there a little longer, they have been in special care nursery or nicu for a week or 6 days. i spend as much time with them during the day as i can, friday was my first day out of the hospital, and it was really hard to be home while they were there! Those two beans are too precious and perfect for words, i am so in love! kortlyn wanted to name them pink and purple, so my sister made them cordinating beanies to go with their new names..kaylee is our pink baby and kynlee is our purple baby, its kinda funny that the only way most people can tell them apart, but me being their mom i dont need the hat!
